Boniface Kariuki, a mask vendor who was shot during a protest demanding justice for blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang’ two weeks ago, has passed away. The family spokesperson, Emily Wanjira, confirmed that Kariuki died today at 3:15 PM.

His death comes just one day after doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital declared him “brain dead” and confirmed that his brain was no longer functioning in the required manner. He had been kept alive by life-support machines since the incident.

Kariuki had been receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit at Kenyatta National Hospital since he was shot on June 17 this year. He underwent two surgeries to remove the bullet from his head. Despite efforts to save him, his condition remained critical, ultimately leading to his passing.

His death has sparked further outrage, with many now questioning the use of force during the protests and the treatment of citizens who take part in demonstrations. The tragic end to Kariuki’s life adds to the growing calls for justice and accountability in the wake of the protests.
