Taita Taveta, Kenya – A large number of women in Taita Taveta County are reportedly facing gender-based violence, with many citing physical abuse by their spouses as a common occurrence. This disturbing revelation came to light during a public forum held at the Dan Mwazo Hall, where survivors gathered to share their experiences and seek solutions.

During the forum, many women spoke openly about the trauma they have endured, with several admitting they suffer from severe mental stress and depression as a result of the violence. Some disclosed that they had been forced to abandon their marriages to protect their safety and regain peace of mind.

“I was beaten almost daily, and I couldn’t take it anymore. I left to save my life,” said one survivor, whose identity has been withheld for her protection.

In addition to physical abuse, the women voiced frustration over the lack of support from local law enforcement. According to several testimonies, some police officers allegedly demand bribes from victims before taking up their cases. Others are accused of colluding with perpetrators, making it nearly impossible for victims to access jus

tice.

“It’s heartbreaking when the people who are supposed to help you turn against you,” one woman said. “We’re being silenced not only by our abusers but also by the very system meant to protect us.”

Human rights activists attending the meeting condemned the actions of the rogue officers and called on the national and county governments to take urgent action. They urged for the establishment of safe shelters for victims, access to mental health services, and strict legal action against perpetrators and corrupt officers.

Gender-based violence remains a critical issue in the region, and without systemic changes, survivors fear their cries for help will continue to go unheard.
