Uganda has dismissed concerns about a possible Ebola outbreak within its borders after Nigeria confirmed a new case of Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease in a woman with a recent travel history involving Uganda.

Uganda’s health authorities have clarified that the patient’s travel through the country does not establish that she contracted the virus there, saying investigations are needed to determine the source of the infection.

Uganda maintains that it has no confirmed active Ebola cases, noting that the country previously declared its Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak over after completing the required monitoring period without detecting further transmission.

Meanwhile, Nigerian health authorities have intensified surveillance and contact tracing following confirmation of the infection. Officials are monitoring 44 people identified as contacts of the patient to identify possible additional infections and prevent further transmission.

The case comes amid wider efforts to contain the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak associated with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), raising the importance of regional cooperation in monitoring and responding to infectious diseases.

Health authorities across Africa continue to emphasise early detection, cross-border information sharing and prompt medical attention to minimise the risk of further transmission. Investigations into the Nigerian case remain ongoing as officials work to establish the source of infection and assess the potential risk to the public.
