Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have opened fresh talks on opposition cooperation, raising questions about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has held talks with Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County, signalling a fresh push for opposition unity ahead of next year’s elections.

The meeting took place on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, during Mashujaa Day, shortly after Gachagua returned to Kenya from the United States.

Sifuna attended the meeting alongside leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, as both camps explored avenues for cooperation in the run-up to the August 2027 General Election.

According to reports by the Daily Nation and The Standard, the discussions touched on the possibility of working towards a united opposition presidential ticket to challenge President William Ruto.

Sifuna Signals More Engagements

Following the meeting, Sifuna indicated that the engagement could mark the beginning of further consultations aimed at bringing opposition leaders together.

The discussions come amid growing pressure on opposition factions to agree on a common strategy and avoid divisions that could weaken their challenge to the incumbent administration.

Gachagua, meanwhile, has continued to position his DCP party within the broader opposition movement as political leaders negotiate possible alliances and leadership arrangements.

Could the Talks Reshape Opposition Politics?

The engagement has sparked fresh debate about whether Sifuna and Gachagua can overcome their past political differences and establish a working relationship ahead of the next election.

Sifuna previously supported Gachagua’s impeachment, a development that formed part of their complicated political history. However, the emerging discussions suggest that cooperation remains a possibility despite earlier disagreements.

Reports indicate that the wider opposition discussions also involve questions about who could emerge as the coalition’s presidential flagbearer, with Sifuna, Gachagua and Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka among the names mentioned.

No final presidential ticket has been announced, and the outcome of the consultations remains uncertain.

The latest meeting therefore marks an important development in the opposition’s ongoing efforts to explore common ground, although any lasting alliance will depend on further negotiations and agreement among the participating political factions.
