Kenyans are bracing for a sharp increase in the cost of living after the Kenya Transporters Association (KTA) warned that transport fares could rise by up to 14 percent following the latest surge in fuel prices.

The warning comes as motorists across the country woke up to record-high pump prices, with both diesel and petrol now retailing at over KSh 206 per litre the highest ever announced despite government assurances that the country has sufficient fuel reserves.

In its latest statement, KTA noted that diesel prices have risen by more than KSh 40 per litre, a move expected to significantly impact the cost of transporting goods and passengers. Diesel, which powers most public service vehicles and cargo transport, plays a critical role in determining overall transport costs.

The ripple effect is likely to be felt across multiple sectors, including food distribution, manufacturing, and retail, further straining household budgets already grappling with high inflation.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has sharply criticised the government for failing to take decisive action to shield Kenyans from the rising fuel costs. He argued that the continued increase in prices is worsening the economic burden on ordinary citizens.

Meanwhile, taxpayers are facing an additional financial strain of KSh 3.2 billion following the cancellation of a fuel import contract before the shipment arrived at the Port of Mombasa.

Reports indicate that the cancellation has raised serious concerns about transparency and efficiency in the fuel procurement process. Analysts warn that the financial loss could ultimately be passed on to consumers through even higher fuel and commodity prices.

In response, the Senate Energy Committee has launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the awarding and subsequent cancellation of the multi-billion-shilling tender. The committee aims to establish whether due process was followed and to identify those responsible.

As scrutiny intensifies, Kenyans remain anxious about the potential for further price hikes and their impact on everyday life.
