International  Women’s Day 2021. While every day is a women’s day, this particular day (March 8) is marked to honor all the women and their achievements regardless of the divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.

The event, which has been observed since 1911, is also used to rekindle the struggle for gender parity and women’s empowerment.

Kwale County is celebrating their Women Rep Zuleikha Juma Hassan amidst this Covid-19 pandemic through the many events Hon Zuleikha has organized in the passed that has left a mark of remembrance to date including sponsoring inter-schools debate, awards programs, stakeholder meetings and conferences to mark the occasion.

In one of the social media groups in the region, majority described Zuleikha to have achieved a lot through institutional, administrative, social protection and legal reforms, including the promotion of gender mainstreaming in all governing processes within the county and at the national level.

Speaking to one of the National Stations, Hon Zuleikha underlined the gains made towards achieving gender parity in the educational sector, which she said had resulted in an increase in women’s participation in the decision-making levels of public life particularly in his region. However, cited there was still a lot of work to be done to achieve the minimum threshold of 30 percent of women’s representation in decision making organs in all spheres of public life either at the county or National Level.

Zuleikha is celebrated on this day for engaging with stakeholders, such as traditional and religious authorities, to eliminate diverse issues of harmful cultural practices that undermined the rights of women and girls in the community. I.e End to sexual harassment and all forms of violence against women and girls, health care services that respond to the needs of women, and equal participation in political life and decision-making in all areas of life.
