Kalonzo Names Orengo and Matiang’i Co-Chairs of Ukombozi Alliance, Says “Super Alliance Is in the Making”
November 5, 2026

Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) and The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA) Party Leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has appointed Siaya Governor James Orengo and Jubilee Party Leader Fred Matiang’i as co-chairs of the Ukombozi Alliance, in a move that signals renewed efforts to consolidate opposition political forces ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo made the announcement on Thursday upon arrival at Kisumu International Airport, marking the beginning of his political tour of Migori and Homa Bay counties.
The announcement comes amid growing political realignments and discussions among opposition leaders on the formation of a broader political coalition capable of challenging the current administration in the next general election.
Speaking during his arrival, Kalonzo declared that a larger political alliance was taking shape, urging Kenyans not to be concerned by the public disagreements and political exchanges among leaders within the United Alternative Government.
“The Super Alliance is in the making,” Kalonzo said, expressing confidence that ongoing political engagements would eventually lead to the formation of a stronger opposition coalition.
The Wiper leader was accompanied by Democratic Party leader and former National Assembly Speaker JB Muturi, DAP-Kenya party leader Eugene Wamalwa, WPF Deputy Party Leader Designate Mohammed Ali, and party chairman Jamleck Kamau.
Former Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Secretary-General Raphael Tuju was also present during the arrival.
The appointment of Orengo and Matiang’i as co-chairs is expected to strengthen the alliance’s leadership structure and bring together leaders from different political backgrounds as opposition parties continue consultations on their future political direction.
Kalonzo Raises Concerns Over Intimidation of Luo Council of Elders
In a separate development, Kalonzo condemned what he termed intimidation by the State against members of the Luo Council of Elders.
The Wiper leader revealed that he had been scheduled to hold a breakfast meeting with the Luo Council of Elders alongside the Akamba Council of Elders on Thursday.
However, the meeting was abruptly cancelled after the elders allegedly received warnings that proceeding with the engagement would result in the withdrawal of support for their offices and the cutting off of their finances.
Kalonzo expressed concern over the alleged threats, arguing that political and cultural engagements should be conducted without intimidation or interference.
The cancellation of the meeting adds to concerns raised by opposition leaders over the political environment and the freedom of individuals and institutions to engage in political discussions.
Kalonzo Reaffirms His Political Ties to Luo Nyanza
Kalonzo also spoke about his longstanding political relationship with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing Luo Nyanza as his second political home.
The Wiper leader’s remarks underscored the importance he continues to attach to the region as he begins his political engagements in Migori and Homa Bay counties.
His tour is expected to provide an opportunity for him to engage with local political leaders, supporters, and community members as opposition parties continue to explore possible alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
The visit also comes at a time when political leaders are increasingly positioning themselves for the next electoral contest, with coalition-building and negotiations emerging as key issues in the country’s political landscape.
Opposition Alliance-Building Ahead of 2027
The appointment of Orengo and Matiang’i, alongside Kalonzo’s declaration that a super alliance is in the making, highlights ongoing efforts to bring together political leaders and parties under a common opposition platform.
Whether the emerging alliance will translate into a unified electoral strategy remains to be seen, as opposition leaders continue navigating political differences and negotiations over leadership and the coalition’s direction.
Kalonzo’s latest announcement, however, signals that discussions around a broader opposition alliance remain active as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.
