GOVERNMENT SHOULD RESCUE ABUSED CHILDREN.

In whose hands are our younger brothers, sisters and nephews safe? Where are they supposed to ask for help when they feel they are not going the right way? It is so unfortunate that today, many are running from those very arms that are supposed to protect them.
A very painful reality is unfolding. Young, innocent children at the age of 2, 3, 4 and 5 are being beaten, denied food, burnt with hot wires and knives, left to sleep in the cold at night, and some are even denied the chance to go to school. These children are so innocent and they cannot be heard by anyone. When they try to explain themselves, most people ignore them. Some parents are even turning into ‘vampires’, biting children using their own teeth, which is so disturbing.
A question that we must ask ourselves is: how did we get here?
According to the law, children’s protection is not a favour but a right that must be adhered to. The Constitution of Kenya, Article 53, states that every child has the right to be protected from abuse, neglect and violence.
The government should take action on such issues. This is no longer someone else’s problem; it is OUR problem. The Directorate of Children Services should take action and rescue children undergoing such abuse. The police, chiefs and other relevant authorities should also ensure that children are protected from any form of violence and neglect.
At the same time, we must acknowledge that some abusive parents are battling drug addiction, poverty and mental health challenges. While abuse should never be justified, some of these parents may need rehabilitation, counselling and support rather than simply being sent to jail.
Let us be honest with ourselves: we have failed.
We have failed to protect the very children who depend on us for safety. It is time for us to speak up, take action and ensure that every child grows up in an environment where they feel safe, loved and protected.
Our children deserve better.
