President William Ruto is set to issue nearly 200,000 title deeds during his ongoing tour of Kenya’s Coast region, as the government moves to address longstanding land ownership and tenure challenges.
The President’s eight day tour covers all six Coast counties, Taita-Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Tana River and Lamu with the distribution of title deeds forming part of the government’s broader land ownership programme.
A total of 189,449 title deeds are scheduled to be issued to beneficiaries across the region.
How the title deeds will be distributed.
Taita-Taveta is expected to receive 31,318 title deeds, while Kwale has the largest allocation at 94,175. The Kwale beneficiaries are drawn from Lunga Lunga, Msambweni and Kinango constituencies.
In Kilifi County, 36,826 title deeds are scheduled for distribution across Kaloleni, Rabai, Ganze, Kilifi South and Malindi constituencies.
Mombasa has been allocated 4,360 title deeds, while Lamu and Tana River will receive a combined 22,770.
The government says the exercise is part of efforts to issue 500,000 land ownership documents in the Coast region, where land ownership disputes, historical claims and squatter settlements have remained longstanding issues.
The issuance of title deeds is expected to provide beneficiaries with formal documentation of land ownership and greater security of tenure.
Ruto to launch major projects
Beyond the title deed programme, President Ruto’s Coast tour is expected to focus on several development and infrastructure projects.
In Lamu, the President is expected to break ground for the proposed East Africa Refinery, a project estimated at about Sh2 trillion and being developed through a partnership involving the Kenyan government and Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote.
The refinery is expected to process crude oil from Lokichar in Turkana County, with refined petroleum products targeting markets in Kenya and the wider East and Central African region.
The President’s itinerary also includes the inspection, launch and commissioning of projects covering roads, housing, education, water and energy across the six Coast counties.
The tour is scheduled to continue until October 3, 2026.
